Company is steeped in tradition and admirable values, but does not move quickly

Former Employee - QA Engineer in Foxboro, MA

I worked at Invensys full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The environment is excellent; co-workers are all excellent to each other, and the amount of assistance I got as a new employee was phenomenal. There are a significant number of employees around my age as well, which is uncommon at this time.

Projects do allow motivated people to distinguish themselves. The wide breadth of products sold by the company coupled with each product's technical complexity allows an employee to choose to deep dive or become a generalist, as suits their temperament.

Work/life balance was good for most of my time there; few managers make demands on their employees that require more than 40 hrs a week.

Company has excellent health and educational benefits and seems to care about employees, despite the minimal raises.

    Cons

Pace is slowwwww. No pressure yields projects that at best move at perfectionists' pace, and at worst simply ship out incomplete when marketing deadline is reached. Employees who are not self-starters are allowed to hang on by the work of others.

Additional company inertia was introduced when the company started horizontally integrating.

Significant knowledge isolation, "tribal knowledge". Lacking a centralized way to share information to new hires about equipment supported in the field but no longer in active R&D.

I departed because my transition into a more advanced position was fraught with delays and broken promises. I was, in the end, placed where I had requested, but I'd lost faith in the management to effectively allocate staff where needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let people (including yourself) become complacent. Your primary customers may make decisions and purchases at a glacial pace, but you will need to adapt and stay agile, incorporating advice from younger employees, in order to beat competitors like Siemens and Emerson in the market space.
