    I worked at J. C. Penney full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    A paycheck and very little else

    Cons

    Where should I begin...I was treated like a prisoner. We had to have any bags opened and checked by security while entering and exiting the building. I was then watched on camera while at work by security cameras (no less than 5) focused on me at my work station. My supervisor commented openly how she could easily terminate me and others in my department. She also told us that we were assumed to be criminals with how other departments viewed us. There is no sense of "team" here. Departments squabble and fight for their own turf (literally!) and property on that turf. Case in point: a department had some vending machines in its area nearby mine. After using their machines for a few weeks, we were told they were for that department's employees only and we were forbidden to use them.

    Furthermore, JCP seems to want to have employees this way. They cater to the people who complain loudest and do the least. Those that hunker down and work well are ignored for that. An environment like this is its own death spiral. Those with a positive work ethic will not seek employment here, nor will they wish to stay. On their departure, they will be replaced by lower achievers with lower standards. And these will suggest to friends and family they should consider employment here. The standards bar for achievement is steadily lowered, when it should be raised.

    This is a just a part of the corporate monster that exists. The problem starts at the top where they allow and foster management like what I have described.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    As described with leadership like this, what lies higher up the ladder? As I experienced, my supervisor wanted to have "Yes" men around her and sought a Group-think culture. This appears to be the company-wide accepted status, as her supervisor is of the same ilk and so are many around her.
