Current Employee - REgistered Nurse ER in Fort Worth, TX

I have been working at JPS Health Network full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It's a level one trauma center, so the experience can't be beat. The patient population is challenging, as it's a county facility. But you'll see more in your time here than you will just about anywhere else. Lots of training is available. Orientation for transition nurse was good, with class time and a lengthy orientation period. Teamwork is excellent most of the time. Overtime is always available.

    Cons

Chronic under-staffing and high patient ratios with high acuity make this a very challenging place to work. There are overflow patients in the halls every shift, frequently without appropriate monitoring equipment available. The self-scheduling tool used in the rest of the hospital is not implemented in ER. Schedules are frequently released late and often you can't get time scheduled off when you need it even if you provide months of notice. Management pushes hard for quick turnaround times that are not realistic given the patient load, and seem to be out of touch with what it's like to actually work there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to get to and stay at full staffing for all shifts. Force ER to use the same self-scheduling tool as the rest of the hospital. Find better ways to deal with overflow patients, if they have to be treated in the halls, get enough monitoring equipment for safer patient care.
