Physically demanding labor during the summer leaves you sore after your shift. Also, potential hearing loss

Former Employee - Fast-Paced Environment--You'll Leave With Carpal Tunnel in Walnut Creek, CA
Former Employee - Fast-Paced Environment--You'll Leave With Carpal Tunnel in Walnut Creek, CA

    I worked at Jamba Juice

Pretty much everyone who worked here were students or chill older people--made for a fun environment. You'll leave knowing how to make smoothies. Not a mentally demanding job, just a lot of physical labor.

My boss was a spirited woman. A little anal about a lot of things, but she really tried to keep everyone upbeat.

*PHYSICALLY DEMANDING. Slow during the winter, but back-breaking work during the summer. I would come home sore with tense muscles, a sore back, and aching wrists. For eight bucks an hour, there are much less demanding things I could be doing. When you have 50+ orders backed up and a line that wraps around the building (and there are only like 3 of you out there including the cashier) it's pretty stressful.
I'm not kidding about the carpal tunnel either. I had to wear a wrist brace for a few months--sounds really ridiculous, but it's all that scooping rock-hard sherberts and ice cream. Puts an awkward strain on your wrists, and I'm not very strong to begin with. I dreaded pulling out new tubs of ice cream from the freezer, because that guaranteed wrist pain anyone someone wanted that sherbert.

*LOUD! I'm sure I developed some hearing loss, after spending 8 hours a day listening to 5 different blenders whirling simultaneously, with people trying to shout out names and orders. Seriously, what with all the general obsession over workers' health, you'd think hearing loss would be taken seriously. Maybe in the five years since I worked here they replaced all the blenders with quieter ones, but if they haven't, I'm sure every Jamba Juice employee has some sort of hearing damage as a result of working there--regardless of how minute. My ears would ring after my shifts, and sometimes it was so loud it physically hurt.

*LIMITED CAREER OPPORTUNITIES. I think the best you can do is go from a "team member" to shift supervisor--other than that, you're stuck. Not an issue for most people, since people don't seem to work longer than a few years. I think in the little over a year I spent working here, I got like a $.25 or $.50 raise lol.

*parts of TRAINING are unnecessary and pointless. We had to remember--and were routinely quizzed on--weird little acronyms like "FRUIT" where like the R stood for "respect" or some crap like that. Memorizing acronyms about customer service-related words doesn't make you better at customer service. That just means you're memorizing words. Y

*NO PERKS. You get one regular-sized smoothie per full shift. No discounts or anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My old boss called me like every other day to ask me to fill in for other people, or because it was busy. Please, don't do that.
