It wants to be a good company, but it can't right now.

Former Employee - Service Engineer in Antofagasta (Chile)

I worked at Joy Global full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Reasonable benefits, A well defined advancement program, yearly goals definitions and evaluations. Environmentally friendly. Reasonably good infrastructure. Lots of people willing to provide support.

    Cons

Most of the pros gone wrong. The company has good ideas, but fails miserably to implement them. One can hardly make use of legal vacations. Wages are good only for certain positions and backgrounds up. The advancement program won't work most of the time: If they decide you are good in what you do, you will normally not be able to go any further. When external personnel is hired, most of the times they get higher wages than the rest of the people in equivalent positions already on the company. Environmental protection is more of a political statement than anything else, and safety is oriented to avoid getting sued more than really protecting their workers. The double-standard is sickening.

To be fair, there are groups where this isn't that bad. I was lucky to be part of one of these. Also, I wasn't in a low position, so I was taken into account more than others. But the nature of my position forced me to create bonds at many different places, and all of these had mostly the same problems. I also wouldn't deny the fact that there are people trying to make things right at this very moment, but that is a titanic task and the system has too much inertia to achieve positive changes in the short term.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The few that make things right don't need any advice, only encouragement.

For all the rest, they need to get their ideas straight. They need to sincerely communicate with their people... each area is a mini-company that has near-to-zero communication with the rest of the mini-companies.

They need to set the example instead of showing off that certain rules don't apply to them. They need to start showing appreciation for their lower level employees, i.e. mechanics, electricians, welders, etc. I have seen managers literally destroy excellent work teams, managing their contracts to maximize short term profits but totally neglecting long term plans, and I have seen higher management encourage this type of behavior as well.

They also need to get rid of the "organizational fat". The ones that make things happen don't need another management position to oversee them. They need resources, support, access to critical information that is pertinent to what they do, and they deserve to be respected as people and as professionals, no matter how humble their positions might be. People also need to rest! Employees can't work on a perpetual emergency state... they eventually wear out and then the company loses a lot more.

And finally and most importantly, the commercial area must stop offering slavery support deals, or deals that seriously undermine the finances of other areas. Seriously. It is really easy to offer what is not yours. This is the area were most of the "organizational fat" can be found, and a very low work-ethic.... by far.
