I worked at Keynote Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has become a lot more fun and innovative after going private. Many of the veterans that have fallen into the complacent mindset of "just do enough to keep yourself afloat" have moved on, which has ushered in a new era for developers, allowing them to investigate new technologies and have more creative freedom across the board. The company definitely reflects a work hard, play harder type of environment, and has excellent work/life balance and flexibility, happy hours every friday, catered lunch every wednesday,

    Cons

The company fosters innovation and tries its best to adopt the agile methodology, but lacks the ability to define clear requirements for development to start with. As a result, product team has a backward methodology where engineers define the requirements rather than product management. Compensation is decent, but still below the market standard. Management tends to spend more time in code than in managing their teams. The company, despite the lowered cubes and completely renovated office space, is still somewhat silo'ed but it's getting there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should reward those individual contributors that do a good job, and reprimand those that don't do theirs. Management should also actually manage active projects and prioritize the stories within sprints to ensure a solid delivery schedule. A little positive reinforcement and the occasional pep talk to let the team know how their hard work fits into the bigger picture really goes a long way.
