    I have been working at Kidde-Fenwal as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Flexible hours, easy parking, low pressure work environment make for some pluses. The people are all very friendly, and its not a hard place to get to, although isn't close by Boston at all. Its a good place to get some experience, then move on to something more modern. Many employees work there less than 6 months (especially engineers), or are there 30+ years because they have no formal education and can't go anywhere else.

    Cons

    Treats temps and contractors poorly, very poor communication, run-down old offices and facilities, outdated 9 year old computers, managers without any formal education, and mediocre pay. There is essentially no communication between departments and more time is spent on meetings about meetings rather than getting work done. The technology is very old, and there is a reluctance to change with modern trends. Working in technical publications, there is no UX or UI factors ever discussed or even part of the equation. For a large company like this, its time to move beyond traditional documentation and get with the 21st century. With a large focus on experience rather than education, the company has many people who have 20+ years of experience, but no formal education, so the same old fashioned trends and methods continue to be used without changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Spend less time on ACE meetings and more time on communication, fix up the run down old building, and don't use and abuse contractors. Invest in some younger, educated professionals and encourage change rather than using the same old tactics that don't work. Technical publications is about 20 years behind the times, and needs a massive shift with better systems, a focus on UX and Usability of documentation, and the ability for this department to not be under the thumb of engineering.
