    I worked at Kinder Morgan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Incredible business plan.Committed, down to earth work team. Strong benefits - medical/401k/bonus... A lot of room for career growth if you are willing to put in the time and effort. Promotion from within. The company places a lot of resources into training strong leaders that do not have the industry specific experience. The company is lean, starting at the top, the leaders don't use corporate money for special perks like jets, box seats etc. The CEO, Mr. Kinder, is well respected and admired, as long as he is leading KM will continue to grow.

    Cons

    A lot of turnover in management. The division I worked in is standardizing all facilities across the country. It makes a lot of sense from a corporate perspective, but resulted in a lot of constraints that added up quickly. A lot of the new policies resulted in slower project turn around times, rougher labor relations, and higher costs, but the pressure to perform remained the same. The speed at which a lot of the slogans and policies came down completely committed to the Company and prepared to always be on call. It is not a bad place to be if you are okay with always supporting the job. Benefits are decent and there is room to grow, but it is not something you can close up and walk away from at night or on the weekends. There are environmental concerns with spills and many 24 hours facilities.

    Advice to Management

    Better mentorship opportunities for supervisors and managers are needed. There is not a lot of communication regarding long term career goals. Support your talent by paying for graduate education in related industries, invest in them. Watch the amount of pressure placed on managers regarding spills, many feel like their careers are always on the line every time there is an incident, regardless if they were at fault. When there are incidents, especially after hours, many times there is a lot of standing around, if people are not productively working to resolve an issue, send them home. The expectation that everyone needs to wait around is reflective of a culture problem. Realistic expectations based on resources provided.
