I worked at Kindred Healthcare full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Most of the residents are wonderful, and so are the families. You meet some of the most wonderful people. The maintenance man, Keith, is by far one of the nicest people in the world. The staffing coordinator DeAnne is also a bright, wonderful woman who is an absolute joy to have in upper managment.

    Cons

Administration doesn't speak to the nursing staff unless it's for discipline. The company is no longer "Kindred", but "Midwest Geriatric Managment". Administration cares more for profit than they do residents and staff. Staff is very underpaid with unsafe conditions, there are bed bugs in the Lebanon facility, and staff will say things such as "We don't talk to or get to know anyone who hasn't been here for at least three months." The turnover rate is very high, nurses and aides have even left to lunch or at a point in the shift and never came back. Some residents would say very rude and vulgar things to the staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff recognition goes a very long way. I feel the only time that I was spoken to by anyone from administration was when there were problems in the facility. Overtime, extra work, and "going the extra mile" are left unrecognized, and is one reason the facility can't keep capable nursing staff.
