Current Employee - Center Director in Orange, CA
Current Employee - Center Director in Orange, CA

I have been working at Knowledge Universe full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Many colleagues, including upper management, truly seem to care about "Putting Children First", which is one of KU's sayings... Getting to know the families and children over a period of years is rewarding. There are high points when you know you have helped a child or family and, all in all, a Center Director can make a living wage (although we all know the pay is nowhere close to what the industry deserves)...

    Cons

It is simply impossible to do it all. I see other CDs falling out of their traces and another workhorse is just buckled in to trudge over the corpse of the fallen... That was pretty dramatic... but one overwhelming example is the mysterious calculation by corporate of how many "labor hours" you need to run a preschool... You are not supposed to exceed their "number" I have to be in classrooms daily to make it work. There is no substitute pool (at least in my area) for those times when the teachers are out sick, but the kids are still ok and attending... And the workload of the Center Directors is ridiculous. We are stretched in so many different directions and wear so many hats, it is so hard to keep consistent quality in all the different areas at once. Honestly, because I "own" my center- my community knows it is ME in that building, and I care too much to let things just go... I have to work between 50 and 60 hours every week, often coming in on a weekend to complete tasks. I don't even want to figure out what my "hourly pay" is from my actual regular salary...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just visit us for a day or an afternoon. Roll your sleeves up and work in a center for a full week... change 20 diapers a day, keep the attention of a group of little wiggle-worms while you get through the curriculum, keep your class clean and fix your boards, and write your parent notes with no scheduled planning time and no OT, and show your Directors how to do it all... the supervision, the reports, the family connections, getting "out in the community" and "walking their halls"... I would love to learn the secrets...
