I worked at Lake County Forest Preserves part-time (More than a year)
Working outdoors is great. The LCFP is highly funded, so most equipment is new, clean, and fully operational. Seasonal employees may be given a broad range of tasks, and allowed some level of freedom. Hours are good.
Seasonal employees are not treated like full time employees. Full time employees are unionized, so they are lazy and privileged. The unionized maintenance worker has a cushy job. Seasonal employees are often given the less desirable tasks to complete. Upper management wont even look seasonal employees in the eye. Seasonal employees working weekends unsupervised is an irresponsible move by management.
Advice to Management
Have more respect and appreciation for the seasonal workforce that is keeping these areas beautiful. The seasonal worker is the most valuable contributor to the overall aesthetic of the forest preserves. Take a closer look at full time employee's motives behind working for the LCFP. Apathetic and disinterested full time employees are most likely costing time, resources, and taxpayers' dollars. Hire full time employees who care about conservation, and the LCFP mission statement.
