I worked at Life Care Centers full-time (Less than a year)
The management staff seemed interested in improving the facility and focused on maximizing reimbursement from insurance companies.
Staffing was always minimal, and all were expected to assume multiple roles (nurse, patient tech, secretary, supervisor, and waitress) at all times. There were never enough staff to care for the patients, yet we were supposed to discourage patients from doing things themselves, like walking to the bathroom, even if they were safe to do so. Policy mandated that the doctor be notified immediately if an "incident" occurred, even if it was as minor as the discovery of a skin tear on a patient; having to notify the doctor at 11 p.m. resulted in being screamed at and verbally abused several times.
Advice to Management
Place policies that are realistic. For example, yes, the doctor should be notified immediately if an "incident" includes a fall or injury. Otherwise, a system should be in place for messages to be passed on in a not-emergent matter. Staffing should be based both on census and patient acuity. More staff is needed on weekends. Patient rooms desperately need updating to make them more handicap accessible and/ or single patient rooms. Equipment needs updating so that work can be done more efficiently.
