Current Employee - Entry-Level Enrollment Related in Brooklyn, NY

I have been working at Long Island University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

22 vacation days, 4 floating holidays, 22 sick days per year (sick days carry over, others don't), free parking in Downtown Brooklyn, able to contribute to retirement plan (TIAA-CREF) after 1 year, employee contributes minumum of 5%, LIU contributes 11%

    Cons

As of late, training has been basically non-existent because SO many people are fleeing because of the new administrative changes. Much of the leadership is shady. Base salary seems to be on-par with administrative positions in similar institutions, however, there is not a clear cut model for advancement. We got a new president in July 2013 and she has simply sought to model exactly what she did at her last institution with no real assessment of what was being done well at LIU. She threw out the baby with the bath water (and tons of administrators and staff). The president famously quotes an example of an advisor at her previous institution who went to meet a student at the student's job in Shop Rite. There is NO expectation of work-life balance. Late nights for enrollment offices have been extended (from 6:30-8) and from 2 days a week to 3 days a week, and Enrollment offices are also required to be open on Saturdays as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micro-managing and making fly-by-night decisions. Take a moment to hear and understand the experience and appreciate the expertise of those who've been at the institution for 5, 10 ,15, 20 years. It's possible...just possible, that they know something.
