    I worked at Lowe's full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed my work and found it interesting. I also enjoyed my fellow employees. The health care benefits and 401k benefits were good.

    Cons

Lowe's restructured the pay for their sales specialists. They gave us 3 days notice and then reduced my pay by $700 per month. Our house was foreclosed because of my loss of pay. Because of the work schedule I couldn't find a part time job. Lowe's would not allow a 401k loan program so that avenue was closed to me. My credit rating was ruined. It's 2 1/2 years later and I'm just starting to rebuild my financial situation. Lowe's had limited training. You learned mostly by seat of your pants. The computer system was antiquated. Sometimes to process a large sale it would take 2-3 hours due to the work arounds you had to use due to the computer failures. Management had the attitude that everyone could easily be replaced. No one was treated with respect. The managers always focused on the negatives and never positives. Excellence was not rewarded or even acknowledged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All the management from the regional down to the store level needs to read and embrace "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey and "FISH! Tales" by Stephen C. Lundin, PhD, John Christensen and Harry Paul. Currently, Lowe's style is to motivate by punishment and negative comments to employees. If you made a $50,000 sale they would say, "Thanks for all you do" and what else do you have for me? It always sounded scripted to me as if Lowe's had these written guidelines and the managers never sounded genuine when they were reciting. Where was the excitement? Where was the Happy You're on My Team? The management team always acted as if they were depressed about their jobs. So, how do you inspire great performance from your employees when you hate your job?
