I have been working at Médecins Sans Frontières full-time for more than 5 years

Best benefits I'll likely ever have- top-notch health insurance paid 100% by the organization, generous vacation time (which they encourage you to take), inclusive and non-hierarchical management style- staff have a voice. Open board meetings Important, life-saving work.

As the organization has grown, MSF is having growing pains. Organization leadership still want to act like the organization is a scrappy, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants operation, but in reality MSF is now a billion dollar global movement. Senior management and leadership want to spend lots of time in the field, frequently leaving the office with a management vacuum, which makes doing anything beyond day-to-day operations difficult. The organization is hesitant to invest in additional staff, leaving some departments over taxed. They are also resistant to professionalization or outside input... and try to internally take on projects where they have zero experience, resulting in lackluster outcomes. The organization also does tons of internal assessment and debate... which can be interesting, but often drags out planning and decision making forever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior leadership needs to be in the office as much as possible. Investment in staffing are really critical at this point. And just because someone has worked at another MSF OC or in the field does not make them the best candidate for a job in the US office.
