I worked at Maplecroft full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There are a lot of friendly and wonderful people who work at the company, who are genuinely nice people. Many of whom I will stay in touch with, for a very long time and I'm more than happy to call my friend. This makes for a great sense of camaraderie and a wonderful set of colleagues, especially when these individuals are experienced and diverse people, which makes for great learning opportunities!

The maps and the work are beautifully presented via a great graphics design team, so the projects look very professional and exciting.

It is nice for a company, doing research work, to be located in Bath, which is a pleasant change, since most of the companies of this calibre are located in London.

Nice facilities on the premises e.g. a working kitchen, free tea and coffee, toast.

It is a good opportunity to gain some exposure to the work related to political risk, which is great, given the current economic climate.

    Cons

There is a high turnover rate of staff, which adversely affects morale within the team.

There is no open communication with management, as if you offer any advice or negative insight, it is often taken as a criticism and is not well received. As a result, you often do not feel like a valued member of staff, in which you can voice potential ideas or feedback.

Increased procedures regarding leaving the company, as it can be fraught with tension, which leaves room for disputes arising. This has often meant the withholding of references from employees who have left and asked for one.

While the work can be extremely interesting, it is understandably a high-pressured environment. However, this does mean putting in long hours of work, which is not always reflected in the salary or incentives, for example, in terms of days of in lieu, or paid overtime. As a result, this engenders imbalances with work and life. This is particularly problematic for junior members of staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More transparent salary (and hierarchy) structure, which manages workload, responsibilities with relevant compensation. Offer more opportunities for fieldwork and promotion to lower level members of staff, which would involve more client interaction.

Better organisation of work and workloads, so as, to ensure better planning of projects.

Try to address these problems, not bury them, which would involve greater accountability and transparency, rather than preventing employees from voicing concerns in person (and on glassdoor).
