Current Employee - Sales Associate in Tulsa, OK

I have been working at Mathis Brothers Furniture full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fast-paced environment that really let's you get a lot of experience, fast, in sales. If you haven't done sales before, this really lets you develop your style and personal approach, which will be a big plus when you leave here to further develop your sales career. Excellent benefits.

    Cons

The work-life balance is severely lacking. You have to use your personal cell phone for business, so you will end up taking customer calls at all hours, regardless of whether or not it is your day off or you are home with your family after your shift. They are unforgiving when it comes to quota, even if you were previously one of their top writers for the past 3 years running. My approach to sales is to be honest, inform the customer of all options, and suggest products that fit the customers' needs, rather than to pressure them into buying something I want them to buy. That works very, very well for me and I am in the top four every single month. My new manager follows me around and lectures me if I don't pressure the customer to buy the most expensive furniture, mattresses, rugs, etc. Whenever I try to pressure someone, I end up losing them. I've addressed this issue of incompatible styles and personalities with my manager's manager, HR, and the district manager, but the response is always "tough. Do it his way or avoid him so you don't have to listen to him." The benefits are great and I make upwards of 60 grand per year (this number, by the way, is not typical of the average salesperson... not by a long shot. I work a LOT harder than most), but I can't watch my sales plummet when I do as my manager says, or get 10 minute lectures after every up if I don't do what he says (EVEN IF I MADE THE SALE!). I'll be leaving in October.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you change management, and your top writers come to you saying that they don't work well with the style of their new managers and ask for a transfer, do it! There are many different sales and management techniques, and sometimes they do not mesh well. It isn't worth losing a top writer just because you think everyone should be able to get along with everyone else and their personal approach to business.
