If you are considering offer from McKinsey, it means you probably do not have a better one. Working in McKinsey will let you continue your search without any reputational damages, and limiting scope where you can continue looking. It may even help you to land a job that you do not have now.
If you hope to utilize any experience you had before, stay away. Understand that you are about to face experience comparable to forced religious conversion. The God is going to be McKinsey Way and his disciple, Marvin Bower. Anything you knew before is worthless, regardless what you hear in hiring process. Any insight beyond shallow ppt slide or ad hoc “problem solving” meeting with partner that sees problem first time in his life, is going to be punishable. Insistence on your views leads to excommunication. Make sure your calculations are right, compared to average guy, you will be working at least 30% more. If you also include travel, 40% more. Your chance to be divorced is going to be double. If you are a woman, you are not going to have a child while at McKinsey.
Advice to Management
Stop using ignorance of your clients and deceiving them with flashy presentations and near theatrical performances. Add some content to your presentations, not just fluff. Advice to clients. Make your contracts always contingent on performance. If they say, we will increase profit, structure fees to give them percent of increase, and not just flat fee. Never agree on flat fee, you will be duped.
