Not what they used to be, and moving in the wrong direction.

I have been working at McLendon Hardware full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great name in the industry as the place to go for selection and advice. There are some good employees that really know what they are talking about and enjoy helping people.

    Cons

I was a very happy customer years ago and thought it would be a great place to work now, but I was wrong. They are living on their reputation from the past, and not at all what they used to be. The management and ownership of the company are completely out of touch with how to run the business and make it successful, and it shows in their daily decisions. The benefits are awful (health insurance especially), and they hire way too many part time employees so they don't have to pay them benefits. The training is almost non-existent, a brief orientation and then you are just thrown into the fire. Their production selection is slimmed way down from years past, and is only getting smaller. Sure, if you want to buy clothing or toys they bring it in to sell, but every day they do away with items people need to repair their homes. Employees are not treated well here either, the President walks through the store everyday and doesn't even say hi to the help or customers. Sad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to bring in new people to run this company. From the President, to HR, to purchasing to operations, to marketing (especially), gut that group of people and bring in new blood that have the right attitude and can turn it around before it's too late. The company was once great and a pillar of the community, but now it is struggling to survive and living on the past. Do something about it.
