MSC is a breeding ground for nepotism, short sightedness and Mediocrity

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Chicago, IL

I have been working at Mediterranean Shipping Company full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Good salary and benefits
You're in Chicago which is a great city to live in
Good place to network for better opportunities

    Cons

Nepotism runs rampant. Unless you're from Europe you'll never get a fair shake here. Any American who joins MSC better be a great butt kisser because otherwise you'll be stuck at the bottom for at least a decade until, for seniority's sake, they give you with a bs promotion with a meaningless job title and a pathetic excuse for a raise that should have been given at least 5 years earlier if you're an asset to the company. You will be worked like a dog with very little if any respect for your accomplishments. The corporate culture is extremely unpleasant to the point that some days it feels like being in an air conditioned prison cell. Miscommunication between departments only makes getting simple tasks more challenging than they should be. Good benefits aside you have to wait at least 6 months for a measly 5 days of paid vacation time. The turnover rate is atrocious because they just don't invest the proper time and money in employees who could take the company to new heights.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start taking better care of your employees or have fun being number two to Maersk. Your European style of management won't work unless the American employees experience the benefits of it along with their European counterparts. If you see a young employee on the rise take them under your wing and teach them how to improve; don't allow them to be crushed under the heel of seniority otherwise they'll seek greener pastures. The more employees you lose the more possible employees your competition gains. Have training courses for managers. It takes more than knowledge of the business and nice clothes to be a manager. It takes leadership skills which many mangers lack.
