Former Employee - Flatbed Driver in Tulsa, OK

I worked at Melton Truck Lines full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Big on health. Good training program for newbie flatbedders. Good miles and health insurance if you don't smoke or drink.

    Cons

You don't follow their rules (their rules...not dot rules) you gotta go. Example...i was a newbie flatbed driver and I won't like it was a learning curve coming from dry van and reefer. They didn't understand it. So safety in Tulsa and in Ohio (I think) took away my home time because I was doing what dot law stated and not what Melton wanted. They saw that I was logging it as I did it. So if it took me 2 hrs to secure my load as a new flatbedder, I would log my 2hrs. They got upset at it and said "you need to put 15 mins on duty, sometimes put 16 or 18 mins to throw them off. But anything over 30 mins is unacceptable." I told them no I'm doing what I'm supposed to do and my miles dropped and they fired me because I defied them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Getting excessive with the 30 min rule like that will only get guys like me to make a phone call to dot and get you inspected. Because half of the loads like aluminum and such don't take 15 mins to secure...and dot knows that
