I worked at Montgomery College (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The college employs a highly educated and credentialed faculty, with many holding PhDs and/or multiple Masters degrees. People generally don't get into teaching for the money, much less teaching at a community college, but most of my colleagues clearly loved what they were doing and specifically wanted to serve a community college student population. The student body is among the most diverse I have ever worked with; MC students come from all over the world and from varying socioeconomic backgrounds, which contributes to a wonderful, global atmosphere. MC makes it easy to teach at any of the three campuses. The administrators are generally pretty approachable and go to bat for their faculty. LGBT friendly.

    Cons

I gather that things have improved somewhat for adjunct professors since my employment at MC (for example, adjuncts now have a new, larger office; when I was teaching there, we had one office the size of a broom closet), but in my experience, getting classes was very competitive, especially in the summer. It was not uncommon for a class to be cancelled before the first day due to low enrollment or other scheduling issues. The pay is atrocious, especially given the very high cost of living in Montgomery County, MD. I needed to have two to three other jobs in addition to adjuncting just to stay afloat. You are given lots of autonomy but not very many resources, which is tough for a new teacher in particular; such resources and guidance are probably there but need to be sought out on one's own. No one is going to ask how things are going or if you need anything, so best to be very autonomous or else not a new(er) teacher if you decide to work here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay adjuncts what they are worth and allow them access to more classes (including electives and higher level courses). Provide newer professors with more support and guidance so that they don't feel that they have been thrown to the wolves.
