I have been working at Museum of Science full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Initial pay is decent for a non-profit organization. Vacation time is fantastic. Management listens to opinions (listening and acting on are different stories though). Company has a match program for retirement accounts. Work-life balance is great as well. A lot of employees stay for a long time (although it's mostly because they are complacent).

    Cons

Your initial pay will likely be the only pay you'll ever have. They don't do "raises", as the NPO status gives them an excuse not to. They do "merit increases", which doesn't even cover inflation. Management may listen to you and have an open door policy, but good luck trying to get anything changed in the organization. They are archaic in terms of moving ideas forward. You have to be vested for 5 years to receive the rewards for the retirement contribution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Defend your employees--get them raises, title promotions, anything you can to keep good employees. Give out bonuses for jobs well done. Don't just treat them like a number.
