I worked at NCH Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Loved my nurse colleagues and patients. My first couple of years were great under my first couple of managers. Able to accomplish much with the right manager. Beautiful location, and hospital is well maintained environmentally.

    Cons

During the time that I worked there I was NEVER given a pay raise--even though I received several accolades. There is a major disconnect between upper management and employees. My department had twelve managers in a ten year period--and some of those years the position laid vacant (no joke!). Finally, they hired a consultant who was paid twice as much as a regular manager, and completely desecrated our department. I had no patient complaints, but was dealing with 2 on one managerial meetings , micromanagement of my nursing notes, and documentation of any possible moment at work--always to apply negatively toward my record. Management was clearly documenting to fire me. I was able to leave for a better paying position--but it is quite common for them to "gun" after employees, and I had witnessed this process multiple times, so I knew that I would have been fired if I didn't jump ship. In addition, I was told by several employees that people who apply for workman's comp automatically lose their jobs at some point. On more than one occasion, I had a patient tell me that NCH means Never Come Home. I was hired by a manager from another hospital who believed that NCH took years off her mother's life. When I left this hospital, my department was actually counting plastic ware provided to patients as a high ranking official was receiving a $100,000.00 pay bonus (again, no joke!).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management was constantly voting for their pay raises while leaving nursing salaries stagnant. During my ENTIRE career at this hospital, I never got a pay raise. This hospital provides no market increases, and unless you go into upper management--your compensation is very poor. My advice is to please PAY YOUR NURSES. The higher official did not deserve the $100,000.00 bonus while nurses received nothing. I am grateful that I now work in an institution that appreciates my work, compensates me with TWICE the salary for the same work I did at this institution, and provides regular pay raise and incentives.
