I have been working at NRG Energy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I believe this company is poised to be the "google" of energy in the future. Management (in general) treats employees well and provides opprotunities for growth and development. Employees are generally very knowledgable and talented within their fields. Pay seems good for the energy industry.

    Cons

As with any huge company, it seems that sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Also, the hours can be greuling at times. While most managers are good, as with any large company, there are managers who are not so good. Lots of M&A activity, which could be good or bad, depending on whether you like that type of environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If this company is going to be the "Google" of energy in the future (and I believe we can), Human Resources MUST improve and change drastically. Many feel that business partners are more focused on telling the business what can't be done rather than working together to create a path to success. Development opportunities are lacking- there is no retention strategy to speak of, and HR in general feels very much part of the "corporate machine" rather than a partner with the business. Take a page from some of the other companies you emulate and then re-vamp your entire HR strategy and team.
