I worked at National Endowment for Democracy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing grantees and overall excellent mission (though it gets funneled into neo-con ideology too often). Very smart colleagues who all care about helping people and learning from each other. Travel to see grantees is inspiring and fulfilling.

    Cons

Leadership is stuck in the '80s. Promotions are very slow and many in low-paying positions are over-qualified. Sometimes too ideological. Institution also does not deal with its reputation well, or have a real publicity strategy.

    Advice to Management

hold upper-level staff (i.e., those from the '80s) accountable - be a democratic organization internally....
