Fast growth opportunities available, but compensation not worthy.

Current Employee - Assistant Store Manager

I have been working at National Stores Inc. full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

-With the company expanding from the west cost to the east cost, I was able to travel to many states to set up many store openings.
-There's always opportunity to grow from associates to management within a short time frame.
-You get to meet different people with different backgrounds of retail experience.

    Cons

    -Employees are under appreciated.
    -YOU DO EVERYTHING!!!
-Stores are open EVERYDAY of the year! Stores are not closed for the holidays.
-Inconsistencies with guidelines and procedures from upper management.
-No annual raises. ONLY if your getting promoted. Whether its into a new position or moving from low volume to high volume stores.
-Hours hardly available to regular associates.
-Upper management always setting unrealistic goals with whatever little resources are available.
-Bonuses only given to store managers. Assistant managers and Key Carriers are not eligible.
-It is difficult to rid of employees who do not work(unless they quit) Therefore, it causes everyone else to picks up the slack and creates a hostile work environment.
-H.R department is not attentive to employee issues. More of a "We'll figure it out later" Or "Just deal with it" attitude. Making it difficult for in-store management to handle the situation.
-No proper training for new hires in management. It's more of a "here's the keys so figure it out" attitude. It is a fast paced company, so no real time for preparation and training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to practice what they preach. Appreciate your smart and hard working employees and keep their morale up. Compensation needs to be better for all the work that is expected. You overpay those who don't contribute to the business and underpay those who do.
