    I worked at Netsmart full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great marketing organization, some very smart and dedicated employees, large and diverse client base

    Cons

    Senior Management is more concerned about developing flashy new widgets than shoring up their implementation and development functions. They seemingly invest more and more in marketing to build up the sales and related valuation of the company, at the expense of their existing client base.

    Company very simply, cannot implement what it sells. They put on a great show at conferences, webinars and social media but if you look at their performance in implementing what they sell, it is poor.

    Senior management all came from Cerner and hold to the Cerner mantra of making KC the "center of the universe". Satellite offices in New York and Columbus were the early intellectual center of the company and have some extremely talented people at those locations. Those two offices have the people that make the organization click. To borrow an analogy from the book "Good to Great..." - Netsmart has a collection of workhorses in the New York and Columbus offices. Overland Park is a bunch of showhorses with little meaningful experience that put on a good show"

    Senior management loves to talk about future and show off their new shiny products and widgets. However, clients are clamoring for successful implementation, good support and a "partner" relationship instead of the traditional "vendor/client relationship". Netsmart will dedicate all resources to the sales and marketing effort but will leave you hanging when you look for the same individuals once you become a client.

    Company now has 3 enterprise products which will be difficult to support and clearly sends a mixed message to the market - it's a strong indication of wanting to be "everything to everybody". Development on all products is not consistent and it is difficult to determine where the company is prioritizing product development and implementation.

    Bottom line is that this company has a good deal of talent that is not heard, not asked to participate in decisions. They have lost a TON of talent across the organization in the last 6 months, replaced by staff with little or no experience. Management is clearly looking to grow the KC presence, hire staff to eventually sell this company. Clients are running away, and talented staff are running away as well

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to people outside of Kansas City, implement what you sell, prove to your clients you want to be a partner and not just a vendor.
