New America exposes you to both the seamy and exalting aspects of the think tank world

I worked at New America Foundation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

As think tanks go, this is one of Washington's best and most successful. Money and Google tend to control this think tank's agenda, so if you're a Google acolyte and have a lawyer-client mindset, this could be a great place to work. If you hope to work with a specific program, ignore the overall list of funders and focus on the dominant few who fund the program you hope to work with. Grants come and go, and with them sometimes the direction of a program. Also check out the staff turnover of your particular program. Some programs are stable; others have lots of staff turnover. If you're one of the non-program fellows, then you're about as close to a free agent as 'a tenured professor--but with a short time horizon before you're back in the job market.

    Cons

There is an odd mix of idealism and crass ambition at this think tank. It's not the crass ambition that is unusual; it's the thick patina of idealism that disguises it. In recent years, New America has hired for president high profile purported idealists from outside the think tank world. But rather than bending the think tank's values, they've made Faustian compromises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Longtime employees notice when you publicly express one set of values and privately practice another set.
