I have been working at New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work is challenging and can be extremely rewarding. There is a definite sense of truly making a difference. Everyone can have voice; however, there is a definite protocol. This agency is very concerned about improving the quality of life for New Yorkers. Nice work environment; easily accessible by public transportation; parking can be pretty costly. Great place to work if social change is your mantra. They are the real deal.

    Cons

Incredible workloads with incredibly low wages. Caseworker and Social Worker titles are frequently interchanged without the benefit of equal pay. There is no overtime and you must work additional hours in order to stay on top of the heavy caseloads. Huge disparity in pay between management and staff. Not much room for growth. DOHMH often utilizes temp workers and outside consultants in lieu of promoting from within. Like all NYC agencies without being certified job security can be challenging.

    Advice to Management

Pay your staff accordingly. Overtime pay and compensation is essential. Cover travel costs to and from field visits. There are professionals at DOHMH that do not earn a livable wage. New hires coming off the street should not be hired at a higher salary than employees with several years experience who are required to train them.
