Former Employee - Nordstrom Cashier in Arlington, VA

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Advancement opportunities are constant. Compensation is comparable if not a step above. Nordstrom opens stores frequently, which opens up vast opportunities for growth.

    Cons

Nordstrom full-line sales positions are commission-only, which means, if one doesn't sell, he/she hardly survives. Nordstrom's generous return policy allows customers to return merchandise, which is deducted from the employee's payroll. The company would rather the employee take the lost. I've noticed more minorities as sales persons which causes me to wonder if Nordstrom targets minority to do the frontline dirty work while management is noticeably Caucasian. While there is a show of minority in management to tilt the scales a bit, I believe Nordstrom has it predetermined. I believe Nordstrom is manipulative in attaining their preconceived "numbers" in forging the proper image to public onlookers.

Corporate is a joke. I believe they enjoy unnecessary travel, visiting stores as they strike nervousness and inferiority amongst the staff. They are a waste of money and are not beneficial. They feel like they have all of the answers for increasing sales. Customers will either make purchases or they won't, regardless of how you position racks and signage. Get over yourselves!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lighten up and stop pushing so hard as it only produces layers of unnecessary stress upon your minority-dominated frontline employees. You should invest more efforts investigating the well-being of your frontline employees to see how you can improve working conditions. Might I add "undercover boss" perhaps?
