I worked at Nordstrom full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

co-workers on the sales floor made the day more enjoyable; customers were great and appreciated everything we were able to do for them

    Cons

pay is very misleading; over staffing on the sales floor made it difficult to achieve sales; leaders are not in tune to what is happening on the sales floor,
I think that every location is probably different and this location is not (I hope) indicative of what the company stands for or how it is run, I was told I could expect to make $11-14 hr, I averaged $10, most of the time it was $9, no one can live on that! I am an experienced sales person and manager, so I felt confident that I would achieve this range. Instead I did more standing around, writing notes to customers, calling customers, and talking to the other associates. I have never been more bored in a job in my life!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest! "You'll probably only make $9 hr to start with for a few months until you build your customer base. After that you may range $10-12 hr depending on the time of year and the relationships you are building." Also, be more selective of who you accept into the FNL program. I heard more than one associate say they wanted in the program to be a manager so they "don't have to be on the sales floor anymore." While you're at it, teach communication, negotiation, and peer relations skills in FNL rather than just how to read a report. These are leaders in your building and they don't have the skill set to coach and develop associates; resolve conflict; or communicate effectively with their staff. There's a lot of potential in the building but you're not doing anything with it, until you do the turnover will continue to be high and your sales and customers will suffer.
