I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, employee discount, promote from within, on site human resources (at full line store, Nordstrom Rack is regional), "open door" policy, micro-managed, commissioned, great for your first job.

    Cons

PTO doesn't kick in right away (3 month wait to even start earning your first hour!), promote from within is only to people willing to move every 6 months, management development training is non-existent, human resources offices have the wrong people working in the field, if you speak passionately about something they turn it against you, constantly trying the change things up to compete with online markets (and failing) and overtime you realize that the idea of them caring for their employees is not true- it's about money.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so money hungry and apprecipate the employees you have. The ever changing ideas of how the store is going to be run is exhausting- the whole team knows it will change again in a year, so that's why people's hearts aren't in it. Smaller departments are consistently underappreciated and always overlooked when Seattle big wigs show up- maybe make everyone in the store feel equal and valued for all their hardwork. If buyers buy items that don't sell, don't blame the salesfloor people (they are trying), check in with the buyers. And the buyers can't blame the salesfloor people- the sales associates are the one dealing with the customers so I think they know best over the buyers. And get rid of the Half Yearly Sale- it needs to be a 3 day weekend clearance sale and that's it!
