    Pros

The people there are great and willing to share their knowledge and in general the teams work delivering high quality work and innovative services. It is 'The' place where many big projects are run from in the Cancer / Bioinformatics world -so you get to be the first to do anything as you are expected to set an example. There are always lower level positions available in informatics - if you are good and willing to accept lower pay considering it a 'learning experience'; it is an easy place to move on from. The MaRS building offices are newly renovated - light and airy; everything works in them...but the Airco does struggle in summer. People there work hard but there is a life-work balance discussion with a realisation that they are in the Downtown core to which commuting from outside the Toronto can be difficult. Various options such displaced start-end times / working from home are frequently used. The IT systems are the best I've ever known.

    Cons

Many groups are purely technical so it is difficult to publish work in scientific journals and so receive public credit for your part - if that is important for your career. Large pay structure disparity with few opportunities for advancement upwards or sideways; high staff turnover and positions difficult to fill in some of the technical groups. The lack of 'career structure' is known to management for some years and they have allocated only minimal effort to addressing it. High dependency on Provincial money - that is in increasingly short supply we are told (see 'Advice to Management').

    Advice to Management

Sort out the career structure for those underneath you. Stop giving yourselves large pay increases while ordering - and then not eating - 'Fruit Plates' for executive meetings while pleading there is a need to cut trivial costs on infrastructure such as reducing the normal of types of coffee or not supplying non-caffeinated Teas. Actually hire the auditorium in the MaRS building for the 'All Staff Meeting' instead of patching together rooms or having us walk to the YMCA.
