    Positive Outlook

I worked at Oakton Community College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, Fridays off during summer (approx. 11 weeks), competitive pay, some really outstanding fellow employees to work and share with, great opportunities to interact with students, well maintained campuses with an appreciation for awe-inspiring art around both campuses, free parking. The organization has a solid financial base and is poised to weather economic downturns like 2007-2009, so no layoff worries.

    Cons

Oakton's leadership has waded in the shallow end of the pool far too long. There is a brand new President now, so this part is not a con. However, strong leadership IS AND WILL BE necessary: strong commitment to community, students and employees will take Oakton out of the shallow end and into a deep, rich environment of inclusion, vision and innovation. Without the strong leadership, Oakton has a culture of "business as usual" which doesn't get the job done in the 21st century.

    Advice to Management

Hold your leadership accountable. If they are unwilling or incapable of leading their department and empowering employees to excel in their jobs, then they are replaceable.
