Expected to hit the ground running as an UNPAID intern without training/mentoring. Will do manual labor. Waste of time.

    I worked at Octagon

I really didn't find any Pros. The Office was small, did not have heat on multiple days. Good name in the industry, just not the place for an internship as they did not seem interested in helping me.

Just because the company Octagon is legit, does not mean that the internship is legit. An internship is a two way street, especially if it is UNPAID! You are investing your time to get training and experience. If you apply to work in the NYC offices, you will be expected to due mundane tasks, and will be expected to have all prior knowledge.

Beware of Octagon NYC internship opportunities as you will be sitting at your desk all day, doing nothing. If you are lucky you might be asked to use a label marker, tape up boxes, or perhaps even an EXCEL spreadsheet. If you do the slightest thing wrong, they will not work with you, they expect you to do the work of an employee.

And they expect you to be there even if you have nothing to do and aren't getting paid. If you come in late, because they don't want to take the time to mentor you, or have you sit in on meetings then will FIRE YOU! And they will tell you how your future will be ruined. BEWARE, you can find a better opportunity elsewhere.

Some days will show up at 9AM and your supervisors will show up at 11AM without notice, leaving you with nothing to do for 2 hours, and they are your SUPERVISOR and they are PAID. And if you try to do the same thing, then you are the whole speech of how you aren't tenured! But how can you motivate somehow to do nothing alone in an office and not pay them!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Octagon either just doesn't care about the way the interns are treated in NY or just doesn't know. It is a large company and to his credit, he has no idea what happened, but if he did, I would be hard pressed to think he would laugh. I would like to ask him how the tasks listed above with no pay and no real exposure is supposed to motivate me to show up 40 hours a week.

My supervisor seemed too disinterested in developing an intern, and just wanted to dismiss me as an intern because I showed up late and didn't show up some days even though I cited my reasons above. I don't know anyone that would show up to work to perform mundane tasks everyday, not get paid, not learn anything, and sit in front of a blank computer screen.
