I have been working at Office of the Comptroller of the Currency full-time (More than 3 years)
The amount of knowledge and expertise you gain from working at the OCC as a bank examiner is unmatched. The pay is excellent and grows exponentially and quickly. The benefits packages are unheard of and one of the best in the federal government. When I tell people about my salary/benefits, they are often completely shocked. You will work with great people. Due to the barbell structure in the agency and the amount of potential retirees, you are able to move up more quickly. The opportunities are endless at the OCC if you are willing to relocate. If you are not interested in staying with the OCC long term, working here for any period of time will open many doors for you.
Traveling is extensive in the vast majority of cases, and it leads to a lot of turnover. This is especially the case for young women who choose to have a family. Until you are higher up in the agency, working in large bank, etc. the travel is very unlikely to slow down. Opportunities for less travel are limited and often come towards the end of your career. However, you make better money if you’re willing to travel. You have to have the ability to work quickly and efficiently. You also have to have the ability to be thrown into situations and learn on your own. This also leads to turnover, but that is not necessarily a bad thing for everyone.
