Omni Hotels ChampionsGate is an embarassment to the hospitality industry

Current Employee - Support Staff in Champions Gate, FL

I have been working at Omni Hotels

    Pros

    - discounted associate meals ($1) a day
    - access to network of Omni Hotels with a modest discount (below industry standard though)
    - opportunities abound of you are bilingual or have a good rapport with the HR Director

    Cons

    - majority of managers are uneducated, poor communicators and even lack basic grammatical skills; the hotel is aware of this problem and has yet to rectify it, despite complaints from guests

    - no paid maternity leave, and the Benefits Manager does not disclose this fact when employees are considering the Short Term Disability coverage (the only way a woman can get income if she takes a maternity leave)

    - Entirely too much "diversity," primarily latin staff, where a culture of speaking Spanish and/or "spanglish" is permissible and even encouraged. This is alienating for both caucasian and african americans working at this property

    - most significantly, hourly employees are subject to furloughs with reduced hours from week-to-week

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the fact that during a down economy, associates should be allowed to work full-time if they are hired on and accept a job in good faith, that's advertised as full-time.

Moreover, you should capitalize upon the fact that you have an insurgence of overly qualified associates (due to a down economy), and perhaps leverage their talents instead of "siding" with your core staff of managers who walk around speaking Spanish all day. It's insulting to those of us that not only graduated high school, but also college. It is hard to support your "leader" if they lack basic grammatical, ethics and attendance skills. I think Jurgen Schafers wants managers to promote "mirror image" to associates --- it isn't happening. Wake up!
