    I worked at Oram International Organization for Refuge Asylum and Migration as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Compelling mission and there are not many other groups devoted to giving assistance to LGBTI refugees. ORAM attracts top talent at every level from staffs, interns, volunteers. Publications cover novel areas. The staff that manage to stay in the organization are wonderful to work with.

    Cons

    Unfortunately the organization is a sinking ship because of extensive mismanagement by the executive director Neil Grungas. In this small field of GLBT law, ORAM is known for heavy turnover as both staff and volunteers are overworked and unappreciated. With regards to volunteers, the management takes advantage of foreigner students, ask them to use tourist visas to come to the USA and then take on impossible projects with little to no supervision or guidance.

    ORAM seems to have gone through many attempts to fix the management issue, but the board turns a blind eye to how the executive director acts. It is very very sad that the focus is no longer on helping GLBT refugees and asylum seekers, but on how to manage the excesses and bad decisions of management. For example, many projects have been kept in holding patterns for months if not years, and paranoia about competition organizations means that there is no planning since the staff is constantly told to aim at moving targets.

    The executive director is rarely around (travels around the world on ORAM funds for no relevant purpose) and when he is, it is simply to harass the staff into compensating for his poor judgment and lack of professionalism. I have seen him be openly dismissive to volunteers and staff, in particular if they are not queer or male. I was extremely disappointed in my internship, since there was so much potential in ORAMs work.

    I cannot see ORAM going anywhere without new leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    to the ORAM board:: please be realistic and honest about what direction the executive director is taking the organization. The insane rate of turnover has origins with him.
