Former Employee - Graduate Teaching Assistant in Corvallis, OR
Former Employee - Graduate Teaching Assistant in Corvallis, OR

I worked at Oregon State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Departments do hire almost ready to graduate PhD's to teach some of the course work. The job title is a University Graduate Teaching Assistant, but the work is really for lecturers, as they teach courses on a stand-alone basis. There, people do develop multi-media, electronically enabled, and web-enabled teaching skills. These are invaluable teaching experiences.

    Cons

Those who are in fact acting as lecturers only get a "Graduate Teaching Assistant" title, and there is no parking assigned to these instructors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps you can give these instructors a title, such as "Preparatory Lecturer". Perhaps this does not have to be a faculty position, but it would sound much better, to outside employers, the title of "Graduate Teaching Assistant."
