I worked at Oriental Trading Company full-time (less than an year)

There are plenty of good, smart, talented people that work there. Their onboarding process is informative. Plenty of free/discounted product.

The culture is atrocious. They treat employees as disposible. The turnover rate is so high it's hard to understand how they continue to operate. Coming on board you might be optimistic about the boundless opportunity that there is to grow the company...until you realize the reason there is so much opportunity is the fact that upper management keeps themselves comfortably rooted in the past and actively ignores suggestions that would propel the business into 2014. I'm actually embarrassed for them in how their management and HR department conducts themselves. They talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. They tell you what you want to hear, but won't back it up with action. As a Berkshire company, if Warren Buffet knew how OTC leadership conducts themselves I can only hope he would swiftly clean house and put some competent management in place. If that were to happen it might be a tolerable place to work. These people do not care about their employees. If they can save a buck at the expense of their employees they will, regardless of the value that employee brings to the bottom line. The ironic thing is that they spend so much money on vendors and tools they don't use or know how to leverage that it is laughable; yet they won't invest in updating their archaic and obsolete infrastructure, or in their people. They are so under staffed, and they wonder why they can't attract or retain quality talent when it is obvious to everyone but the people who actually have the power to do something about it. Not to mention the fact that they knowingly mislead employees about their roles and responsibilities and then refuse to adjust their compensation for the work that is expected of them. If I can save one person from the stress and heartache of taking a job at OTC, then the time I've spent writing this is worth it. If you are a results driven professional, don't waste your time at OTC. You won't be valued, they won't fairly compensate you, and they won't help you grow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If I thought that their management would actually listen to any advice, I'd write it here. The sad fact is that they have heard this feedback time and time again from multiple people and continue to do nothing to improve the situation. I saw 7+ key employees/mid-level managers leave within 1 year in a single department, all of whom voiced similar concerns prior to leaving. I personally had candid conversations with executive level management on this very subject and it falls on deaf ears. They even admitted to hearing it before but are unfazed, unapologetic, and even proud about how they continue to run their business and treat their employees. They literally don't seem to care.
