    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Orscheln Farm and Home full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They are flexible with your schedule, but mostly if you are part time. That's about it.

    Cons

You can almost never get a vacation when you want or need one based on blackouts during November and December and for around 2 months during 2 store reviews and store inventory. So that leaves about 4 to 5 months open to get every full time associates vacation in and you can only do one person at a time. Insurance for a family is not very good and is way over priced. The pay stinks, it's not enjoyable at all to work a full time job, and live on borderline poverty, and higher up management just doesn't seem to care about the welfare of you or your family. But they still expect 110%. They claim to promote from within but rarely do. Most store management positions seem to be filled from outside the company. As an assistant or a key holder, you are basically just an over used, under paid disposable tool. They totally support store managers even if they can't or won't do their job properly and they will toss people under the bus for things they had nothing to do with just to cover for themselves. It's an absolutely horrible work environment, where they preach that you're a team but only store managers and up seem to matter to them, even though us lower employees are the one carrying their stores. Also, your schedule is never set. You work days and nights, back and forth and it always changes from week to week. Makes it almost impossible to have a work/life balance or to have involvement in any of your kids activities.

    Advice to Management

Pay the people that are carrying the workload at the stores what they are worth, instead of just everyone at the top being able to live comfortably. The people that directly impact your sales, should matter just as much as someone who sits in an office most of their day, and should be compensated accordingly. Makes it hard to focus on your work when you don't know if you are going to be able to pay your bills. Advance people from within, don't just make the claim that you do. And be more flexible with people's shedule. There is no reason we can't hire full time people to work days or nights. Not be flip flopped around all the time. A lot of other retailers do it this way there is no reason we can't as well.
