Think carefully - V good people at consultancy level - but very poor mgnt and people skills at Partner level

Current Employee - Consultant  in  London, England (UK)
Current Employee - Consultant in London, England (UK)

I have been working at PA Consulting full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - good people in the mid and lower levels of the consultancy organisation
    - good if you live in Gloucestershire
    - good if you are into small app development -and mobile apps
    - good work life balance if you are a PA Partner and in the club
    - good for a few years experience for graduates
    - internal training quality is good largely due to to the fact the trainers generally get all their yearly bonuses and it's a stable life/work lifestyle so it's better than trying to get utilised as a consultant

    Cons

    - basic pay is (10%) below others in the top consultancy market however PA make a big thing about bonuses and share options - but beware - what is promised at interview never materialises - I had 96% + plus utilisation one year (working away from home) and still got a poor bonus because I was 9 or 10 th in the queue in my group - this is because there are people sitting on Government projects (for years 8 to 10 in some cases )in the West Country who are billing at 120% utilisation !!! (overtime billing or some other call out con) and they are living up the road in Gloucestershire so still get back home at 6/7 pm. - you cannot win as these guys get all the bonus pool every year whilst living like an employee and not a consultant.

    - the general personnel management - ie at the designated Management Consultant and Partner level is appalling - I had more personal management skills than these guys but because I was below these grades I could not provide official management direction or support - crazy

    - the attrition rate is mega - recently the whole Business Intelligence team below Partner went to Accenture. Reason: poor Partner Leadership and lack of funding and investment in the group. Other groups in PA are not dissimilar

    - the Partner Group are a club - any new dynamic partners get frozen out and given insufficient support - their ideas, vision etc get squashed - and then they leave for a more dynamic enterprises.

    - PA have been squeezed out of big IT transformation projects - they will have few a consultants dotted around but fail to secure big contracts ( apart from government ) - so often chasing £50- 200k engagements at best.

    - office culture is dismal - physically battery hen comes to mind - toilets too few so disgusting not sure how they get away with this maybe because they say to governing officials that all employees should be at client site ? - culturally they make a big thing about networking - great - however in reality everybody just pays lip service to this 'core' philosophy - it is in the HR tick list to get a good yearly score - however it does not come from the heart neither is it part of the undermining culture ethos of the organisation - Partners are worst at this - try first to get them to meet with you and next when they do they mostly offer no value. The Partners mostly lack any charisma inside/outside the workplace - creatives stay away !

    - PA confidence in their employees to work from home is none existent. I've run two of my own businesses from home so am used to the home ethic when not on client site and yet they still they insist I travel up to 2hrs to their offices when i'm not with a client ??

    - HR worst I've ever come in contact with - it's an upward or out culture - please Google the PIP process for PA Consulting - it's their method of getting rid of older/expensive employees or people they have recruited by mistake .
without providing a financial exit package - it's unbelievable and immoral.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you had it in the heart to be a great Organisation you would have done it already sadly you are are all self concerned and will struggle to achieve greatness.
