I have been working at PNNL

    Pros

At PNNL you can work on just about project you choose. Want to change your career? Want to break into a new field, it can be done here.

You'll rub shoulders with some of the brightest scientists in the world.

    Your schedule is flexible.

You can further your education for on the government's dime.

    401K with match.

    Pension plan.

    Well respected organization.

US Department of Energy is serious about your safety, and so is PNNL.

    Cons

You may work on 5 or 6 projects at a time with 5 or 6 separate project managers.

Your line manager may have absolutely no idea what you are working on, but he helps determine your promotion and raise each year.

    Salary is not competitive.

Degree requirements are absolute. If you decide to stay long term you should consider getting a Master's or Ph.d. You cannot be promoted past certain levels without it.

If you look up bureaucracy in the dictionary, it actually reads PNNL.

You work for the Gub'mnt, The Man, etc.

Your job may actually depend on action or inaction of Congress.

Your project(s), however useful or successful may get flushed down the toilet. Conversely, an utterly absurd waste of taxpayer dollars may be your bread and butter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would advise management to resolve some of the cons, but I have no idea how. The problems run so deep it seems there is no possible way for the organization to actually change.

I believe the organizational structure (charge codes) must go. No one can concentrate on their work when they are constantly worried about their projects disappearing.
