A good place to start a career in the healthcare industry

    Pros

Parkland is a good place to start a career in the healthcare industry. It is also a good organization to have listed on your resume, as Parkland is well respected in the healthcare industry within DFW despite the bad press that's regularly in the media.

If you are concerned about retirement, Parkland has a "true" pension plan. That's practically unheard of nowadays.

Many say that Parkland is highly political, but I do not think it's any different than any other organization. I think it's actually better because although it's highly political, it's scrutinized so much in the media that leaders can't stray too far from doing what's best for the patients and Dallas County taxpayers.

The work is very fast paced, but that's one of the many reasons it's a good place to start a career in healthcare. The fast paced environment exposes you to areas of the healthcare industry that wouldn't have exposure to in many other entities.

    Cons

The PTO structure is a bit awkward. Holidays are deducted from your PTO bank. For example, if you have 40 hours of PTO in August, in September, 8 hours of PTO will be taken from your 40 hours for Labor Day. Their argument is that PTO hours are accumulated at higher rates than other organizations. That's true, but the overall annual time off each years is still a bit less.

Health insurance is a bit costly and coverage isn't that great, considering Parkland is healthcare facility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider better benefits/perks to keep employees long-term. There's a lot of healthcare competition in DFW, that would allow for a slow-paced environment and better benefits/perks.
