I worked at PatientsLikeMe as a contractor (Less than a year)
* Interesting mission and content * Ability to work with some of the best minds in the business * Free healthy snacks and good coffee in the office * Friendly but productive atmosphere
* The person I thought was my manager booked herself solid with meetings for my first week, despite having calendar time set aside for getting to know each other. * "Onboarding* consisted of sharing a Google folder full of lengthy documents to read while managers were in meetings all day. * Open office was distracting and cramped. * Little access to my managers; interactions with them were strained at best.
Advice to Management
Process is good; rigidity and lack of openness to new approaches is not. Adjusting to a new job requires time and face to face contact; not making that time during the first couple of weeks sets the wrong tone for the engagement and loses an important opportunity to build ownership within your employees.
