I have been working at Pediatric Services of America full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Hourly pay is good for LPN level. Most cases pay the Medicaid rate @ 20/hr. Some cases pay more if the client has additional revenues or the patient is a level 3 in complexity. No hassles if you need time off or want to leave an assigned case (providing you give a notice). Paid orientations and inservices. Mosby online center for earning CEU's Small raises are possible over time if you ask, and prove your value to the agency by being a quality nurse. Health benefits are offered but I don't get my health insurance thru PSA so I cant rate the plan. Tuition reimbursement available. Admin/ Office Staff are polite and supportive.

    Cons

Field nurses are the lifeblood of home healthcare but we don't get some of the benefits office staff gets There are no weekend or shift differentials, no sick day pay or paid time off. PSA uses a NED (electronic documentation laptop) which is more time consuming than writing paper notes. Nurses are required to protect the device from damage so it adds to your responsibility. The check box with variables format is not always logical in a non acute setting; I think window forms can be greatly improved to prevent redundancy. Previous progress notes are hard to navigate and are hard to see because the type is ghosted. Redundancy is the biggest problem. Second, not everyone is a great typist so nurses spend too much time correcting typos. I don't think e-notes are appropriate for home care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the NED system. Consider offering PTO bank to field nurses.
