I worked at Physical Optics full-time (more than 5 years)

Many bright minds working on a diverse range of research. Company culture is division dependent, but there were great team values in my division.

Communication from upper management is neither direct nor honest. Decisions affecting the R&D departments are made based on protecting the jobs and salaries of business departments. Changes in the direction of the company and the rules of the SBIR program have led to less investment in new hires and little to no replacement of people who have left, leaving more work spread thick over remaining staff and with no corresponding changes in title/compensation. Politics trumps results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest with employees when changes are made. Demonstrate a path to move up within the company. Prove that degree level and other not merit-based criteria are not a measure of an employee's ceiling for promotion within the company.
