Former Employee - Adjunct Instructor in Oakdale, PA

I worked at Pittsburgh Technical Institute part-time for more than a year

It does pay fairly well compared to many part-time teaching positions. There is good flexibility for instructors in being able to teach and handle classes in their own way.

It's very formal and stuffy. Wearing ties every day seemed a bit much for this environment. It takes much longer to prepare for a class than they let on, because much of the pre-made material (at least in my department) was not very high quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The office culture seems very oppressive and unfriendly. I never felt very welcomed there. Most people would glare at me, even when I said hello. Just another number that comes and goes. The school is EXTREMELY focused on rules, formalism and appearances, and this is actually turning off many students (as I discovered in my conversations with them). It is fine to be professional, but not so formal that you appear out of touch and unfriendly to your students. Basically: lighten up. Have a more nurturing relaxed environment to learn in.
