Current Employee - Academic Advisor in Portland, OR
Current Employee - Academic Advisor in Portland, OR

I have been working at Portland State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Colleagues are great. The AAUP Union is strong and has student support. Benefits are pretty good. You pay 95% of medical benefits, though it use to be 100% when I first started. You can take courses at 30% of the cost. The park blocks are nice during the summer. Faculty and staff genuinely care about the students and integrity of academics.

    Cons

There are no professional development opportunities unless you take courses on campus or pursue outside educational opportunities. My supervisors have never supported professional development and have continuously denied requests. Money is always an excuse, but I've also been denied when I have offered to pay out of pocket. There are no opportunities for growth---it's a dead end job. Additionally, there are not a lot of opportunities to move to other departments. Even if you do a great job, raises are only through the union contract. There are a lot of middle and upper management bloat. It costs $108 or so per month to pay for on campus parking and about $50 for a tri-met pass. There is not a lot of support for the President. The school seems to be pushing towards a corporate model way of doing business.

Pay is not up to par with the required experience and education level (graduate) for this position. Most of my advising colleagues have several masters degrees and/or ten or more years of experience. You cannot negotiate your starting wage. Many of my colleagues are also working other jobs to pay for student loans and to try to save for future housing plans. There are no incentives for hard work. There is a lack of diversity support. Departments are understaffed. There are a lot of managers/supervisors that do not know how to manage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make professional development a priority like it suggests on the actual review form. Otherwise, you will start seeing an exodus of highly qualified employees with institutional history. Truly listen to the students, faculty, and staff about concerns regarding academics, public safety, and culture. Trying to increase enrollment without providing an adequate number of employees does not promote a healthy work culture.
